In May 1900 Florence was in the middle of her annual spring cleaning: “You will have heard of the Relief of Mafeking. We had such a noise last night, guns firing, church bells ringing. Louis was so excited he took the “Gong” outside and began banging it. The maids and Louis have gone into Rock Ferry tonight as there’s to be a torch-light procession from Birkenhead.
